Background: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a transient thyrotoxic state characterized by suppressed TSH and low uptake of iodine 123 on thyroid scanning. SAT is a self limiting, possibly viral and inflammatory thyroid disorder that is usually associated with thyroid pain and systemic symptoms. Many factors can cause SAT.
